I'm a new blogger as well (Since Jan 1st 2008) and am scouring the web for articles on how to boost blog traffic.

I agree with the other comments...those other sites are potential partners. I've realized that on the web, blogs in the same catagory reference each other, blogroll each other, etc. It is a real community.

Good luck. I'll be writing an entry on my blog on what I've learned in my research. Please stop by if you can. Oh--and I'll be 'digg'ing you!

You are absolutely right on the partners vs competitors. The irony is that you are clearly competitors in the SEO world and organic search, but on the other hand there is a lot of complimentary functions to be had.

Compete and Alexa, in my opinion, are pretty much both useless in any level of accuracy. But I just wanted some standard metric that I can use over and over again.

Rss Readership is probably a second stat I should add in as well.

You know what would probably help? Thinking of the other sites as potential partners, rather than competition. :) Good luck. Oh and PS, you're probably better off looking at Compete ratings, but both Alexa and Compete are inefficient at measuring blog traffic as so much of it happens via feed or in email, which is not picked by either tool.
